Dyess Memorial Park

Exciting news! Thanks to the many generous donors and to the relentless work of a committed committee, our community has successfully raised the necessary dollars to fund the Dyess Memorial Park Expansion. Please join us for the dedication of the Dyess Memorial Park expansion on Friday, July 19, 2019, at 10:00 a.m. The park is located near the intersection of Arnold Boulevard and Military Drive, just outside of Dyess Air Force Base in Abilene, Texas.

The Memorial Park Expansion

Following the loss of a Dyess C-130J (TORQE 62) in Afghanistan in 2015, the question was asked about how other aircraft crashes had been honored. While some crashes had been honored in different ways others had not been memorialized at all. This realization led to a desire to create a way to incorporate all of the crashes into a single memorial.

Mitchell Wright, landscape architect, designer, and grandson of Abilene's own "Dub" Wright agreed to design a distinctive memorial to honor the sacrifices of our Dyess Airmen. Wright has developed plans for a one-of-a-kind "sundial" memorial that allows the sun to enter and mark precise points in time on the memorial grounds. On the anniversary of each incident, a ray of light will shine directly on each monument at the exact time of the loss.
